Periodically we are pushing through updates to better your experience some of these update can happen over the air and in that case all you have to do is close out your app and open it again and it should be fixed. If this did not fix your issue then check your app store to see if there is an update. If so please update your app. If neither of these worked please contact us through the support forms or directly through email/text.
Welcome to the app — we're excited to help you discover and support truly independent restaurants. Here's a complete walkthrough of the main screens and features when you first open the app. Onboarding Tutorial Screen
When you launch the app for the first time, you'll see a quick tutorial overlay explaining the map controls. Here's what the buttons do:
List view — Tap to see nearby restaurants in a scrollable list.
Satellite/Map toggle — Switch between satellite imagery and the standard explorer map.
Target/location button — Centers the map on your current position (great if you've searched elsewhere and want to snap back).
Heart/favorites — Save restaurants to your personal list (perfect for local favorites or travel planning).
At the top, there's a search bar for finding restaurants by name, type (e.g., "cafes"), or city.
At the bottom of the tutorial:
Skip — The tutorial will reappear next time you open the app.
Finish — (If logged in) This dismisses it permanently.
Main Map Landing Page
After onboarding, you're on the interactive map showing independent restaurants near you. Key controls:
Top left: List view
Top right: Satellite toggle
Bottom left: Center on your location
Tapping a Restaurant Pin
Tap any pin to open the detail view. You'll see:
Restaurant name
Full address
Open status (right now)
Distance from you
Additional info added by the owner (hours, cuisine, tags, etc.)
Photos — A few load automatically; tap View More to see the full gallery (if not logged in, you'll be prompted to sign up/log in)
Need directions? Tap to open in Apple Maps or Google Maps (your choice).
If a restaurant has no photos yet, the app generates at least one placeholder — tap View More to check it out.
Searching for Restaurants
Use the top search bar:
Type a type like "cafes" → See matching spots near you.
Type a city like "Boise, Idaho" → Map centers there so you can browse restaurants for travel or planning.
Logging In
Tap the User tab (usually bottom navigation).
Enter your email and password.
Forgot your password? Enter your email, then tap Forgot Password — we'll send a reset link.

Once you're logged in to the Unchained Foods app, head to the User tab (usually in the bottom or side navigation). This is your central hub for managing your account and helping grow our community of truly independent restaurants. What You Can Do in the User Tab

Submitting a New Restaurant
Help us add more independent spots! Provide:
Restaurant name (required)
Phone number (optional but helpful)
Full address (required)
Your name
A short description/background about the restaurant — why it belongs on Unchained (e.g., local favorite, unique story, truly independent).
Important: Check the box confirming it's not a chain. We rely on the community to keep chains out. Hit submit, and we'll review it!
Viewing & Editing Your Information
See your account details: name (as displayed), phone number, and email.
You can edit:
Phone number
Password
Note: You can't change your email directly in the app. If you need to update it, contact us — we'll handle it for you quickly.
Reporting a Restaurant (e.g., If It's a Chain)
We do our best to filter chains, but some get through. Help us out!
Provide:
Your name and email
Restaurant name — search to find it (be specific for best results)
Select the correct one
Explain why (e.g., "This is an obvious chain location")
Submit, and we'll review and get back to you.
Reporting an App Issue or Suggesting a Feature
Having trouble or have an idea? We're listening!
Fields (most auto-filled):
Your name and email (use a different email for replies if preferred — it won't change your account email)
Description of the issue or suggestion
You can attach photos: take one new photo or select multiple from your device.
Hit submit — we'll respond as soon as possible.
Viewing & Managing Favorites
Your saved restaurants appear here.
To favorite one: Tap the heart icon in the top right on any restaurant page.
In the Favorites list:
Tap a restaurant to view its details
Or tap "Remove" to unfavorite it quickly
Claiming Your Restaurant (For Owners)
If you own a spot, claim it to gain control!
Provide:
Your name and phone number
Restaurant name — search for it (be patient if it's a common word like "Cafe")
Proof of ownership (upload photos of documents like EIN, SOS filing, etc.)
We'll review (usually quickly) and approve if everything checks out.
Sharing the App
Tap to share — it opens your messages so you can send the link to friends via Apple Messages.
We're working hard to get on the Google Play Store soon!

Deleting Your Account
If you want to remove your account permanently:
Confirm the deletion when prompted
Note: This is irreversible, so only do it if you're sure

Once your restaurant claim is approved, the "Claim My Restaurant" button changes to "View My Restaurant". Clicking this takes you straight to your profile dashboard, where you can view and edit all the details about your restaurant. What You’ll See and Edit
Restaurant name — Correct any small mistakes if the name was entered slightly wrong.
Address — Make it more precise or update if needed.
Phone number — Add or change it here.
Website — Add your site (any typos will be fixed quickly).
Hours of operation — Enter them in a single text box. Format them however is clearest for customers (e.g., "Sunday: Noon–5pm | Monday–Friday: 8am–8pm | Saturday: Closed"). Whatever you write is exactly what users will see, so keep it simple and readable.
Cuisine Types
List the types of food you serve to help customers find you.
Examples: Tex-Mex, American, BBQ, Italian.
Important: Separate each cuisine with a comma (e.g., Tex-Mex, American, Burgers). This allows us to treat them as individual categories.
(Future update: Users will soon be able to filter restaurants by cuisine on the map.)
Ownership Tags
Showcase what makes your restaurant unique!
Examples: Veteran-Owned, Woman-Owned, Family-Owned, Christian-Owned, Minority-Owned — anything that fits.
Important: Separate each tag with a comma.
(Future update: We’ll add map filters so users can search for restaurants by ownership type. We’ll also review popular tags to better organize the database.)
Managing Photos
Current photos are pulled directly from Google. To improve your gallery:
Delete existing photos — tap any image to remove it.
Add new ones — select multiple photos from your device. They’ll update across the entire app for all users to see.
This is the easiest and most effective way to showcase your restaurant.
Saving Your Changes
When everything looks good, simply hit Save. Your updates will go live quickly and be visible to everyone browsing Unchained Foods.

Once your restaurant claim has been approved, you can view and manage your restaurant profile directly in the app. Here’s how:
Edit your restaurant information
Go to your restaurant page and update key details such as:
Phone number
Website
Hours of operation
Cuisine type
Ownership tags
Any other relevant info
Cuisine and ownership tags
Make sure to separate each tag with a comma (e.g., Italian, Pizza, Family-Owned, Veteran-Owned). This helps ensure everything displays correctly.
Adding or deleting images
For the best results, add, update, or remove photos directly through the Unchained app. This is the recommended and most reliable way to manage your gallery.
The rest of the editing process works very similarly whether you're using the app or the web version.
